Hello fellow taxpayers! I hope you are having a great new year! Our website is finally up and running (as you can see) and I am very excited about my clients bringing me their tax documents so I can prepare their return. I know most people don’t get all of their documents until about the middle of February, but it’s never too late to start getting ready! Gather up all the documents you have and dig out the Social Security Cards and last year’s tax return.

The IRS will start accepting individual returns, such as 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ on January 19th. If you are anticipating a refund, don’t let the government hold on to your money any longer than necessary. File Early! Of course, if you are anticipating a tax bill, your hesitance is understandable. If that is the case, it’s a great time to adjust your W-4 Form at work to increase withholding. The only thing worse than a tax bill, is a tax bill two years in a row…if you hit three years…call me. I can help.

Remember, even if you don’t choose me as your tax professional, it is critical that you do some research into who you allow access to your tax information. (A short version of how to choose can be found at https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc254.html) There are many more links at www.irs.gov to help you determine what kind of questions to ask, and preparers to avoid. The IRS also provides a “Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications” here http://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf. I’ve noticed some websites hyping tax deductions for some crazy expenses. Beware of those as well. If deductions for private airplanes, swimming pools and pet food sound too good to be true…there’s a reason.

I hope all of you are having a smooth transition into the AnchorNew Year and wish you good health and happiness.

Regards

Jeri
